Aloha, Akane

by seagoingJLW - last update: Mar 1, 2003

Just got back from our Hawaiian cruise.

The island of Oahu, called "the gathering place," has an area of 597.1 square miles. With an average temperature of 68°F to 81°F and an average rainfall of 23 inches per year on the coast, it has a population of 872,478.

Although the city and county of Honolulu is geographically the smallest of the four Hawaiian counties it has three quarters of the state's population. Honolulu itself has a population of 377,059. Honolulu governs the entire island og Oahu.

The ethnicity can be broken down into 22% Caucasian, 20% Japanese, 19% Hawaiian/part Hawaiian, 13% Filipino, and 5% Chinese.

The official flower for the island of Oahu is the 'ilima.

Waikiki

Whatever you do, go to Waikiki. It has changed greatly since my last trip. There used to be absolutely no tall buildings, in fact nothing other than the Outrigger Canoe Club between the Moana and the Royal Hawaiian Hotels. Now it is wall to wall hotels and shops. And it is such a bustling metropolis all by itself. I loved it.

Here you see Irwin and me across the street from the old Moana Hotel. The front still looks the same.

Joan, thought I would check out a page on Honolulu since planning to go back next year. You looked good in that bathing suit from "53". We will be staying on Kauai most of our time.

Nice contrast of old vs. new. Waikiki has sure enough built up over the years.
