Early in the seventeenth century, a group of Englishmen from a ship called Olive Branch attempted to set up a permanent colony but were killed off by Carib Indians within a few weeks. Other attempts by Britain and France also failed until the second half of the seventeenth century.
The island changed hands more than a dozen times. Then in 1765, under the French, the first sugar plantation was started, small towns sprang up and the island began to prosper. As the repercussions of the American and French Revolutions spread to the West Indies, the battle between the French and British for Caribbean supremacy intensified. The Treaty of Amiens in 1802 awarded St. Lucia to France. It was returned to Britain after the Napoleonic Wars
The slaves were emancipated in 1836.
Full self-government was granted by the West Indies Act of 1967.
Miscellaneous Information
The Caribbean island of St. Lucia has an area of 620 sq km, making it only 3.5 times the size of Washington, DC.
The climate is tropical, moderated by the northeast trade winds. the dry season is January to April and the rainy season is May to August.
As of July, 2001, the population was 158,178. There are 90% black, 6% mixed, 3% East Indian, and 1% white. Ninety precent are Roman Catholic with 7% Protestant and 3% Anglican. The official language is English, but a French patois is spoken.
The only thing I found really interesting here were the Pitons.
- Pros:Beautiful beaches and scenery
- Cons:Boring
- In a nutshell:Just another Caribbean island

Not sure what the picture on your Saint Lucia intro page shows, but I find it very hard to believe it's the two Piton mountains in St.Lucia.
