History
Iowa, whose name was the name of an Indian tribe, was part of the Louisiana Purchase. The deal, arranged between Thomas Jefferson and Napoleon Bonaparte, kept the area closed to white settlement until the 1830s.
Following the Black Hawk Indian War that ended in 1832 the United States government gave the Sauk and Fox a small amount of cash, 40 barrels of salt, 40 barrels of tobacco, and some blacksmithing services for the Mississippi Valley lands of eastern Iowa.
Today the Meskwaki Settlement is an area in central Iowa that is governed and owned communally by descendents of the two tribes. It is not a reservation since it was purchased back from the government in 1856.
After the Black Hawk Purchase, Iowa became part of the Michigan Territory. When Michigan became a state in 1836 Iowa became part of the Wisconsin Territory. Two years later, it was the Iowa Territory. The government seat was established in Iowa City, where the Old Capitol built in the 1840s still stands.
The state capitol was moved to Des Moines under the 1857 Iowa constitution. |
