Mountains and More Mountains

Colorado is the land of skiing, steam trains, dude ranches, and MOUNTAINS, MOUNTAINS, MOUNTAINS. The Continental Divide literally divides the state. Denver, because of its altitude of exactly 5,280 feet, is called the "Mile High City." It is the gateway to the Rockies.

Here is a photo of my grandchildren taken in the Rockies just south of Boulder in January of 1997.

History

In 1540, Francisco de Coronado passed through Colorado. The land was acquired by the United States in 1803 via the Louisiana Purchase. By 1825, fur trappers and traders came. Then gold was discovered in Englewood in 1858 (before it was Englewood.) the Colorado Territory was formed in 1861. Lead carbonate ores were found in 1875 at Leadville

In 1876 Colorado became the thirty eighth state. The Ute Indians werre forced onto reservations in 1881

In 1906 the US Mint in Denver issued its first coins. In 1923 oil was discovered north of Fort Collins. In 1954 the US Air Force Academy was established in Colorado Springs.

I have been to Colorado fairly recently because my granddaughter is there, in Fort Collins at Colorado State University.

We went to Denver and enjoyed the scenery of the mountains all around. The picture is of Denver.

We found it difficult to breathe, the air being so thin there.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Colorado is full of mountains and glorious scenery.
  • Cons:It can be very difficult to breathe in the Denver area.
  • In a nutshell:Glorious scenery, good skiing, not too much culture.
