Here's a shot of Downtown San Diego While I was in San Diego last month, all I did was embark and disembark from the MS Statendam. If you know San Diego, you know that the airport is a five minute drive from the cruise ship port.
I really spent time here in the 40s and 50s. Back then I spent a lot of time in San Francisco and in Los Angeles.
History
Spain claimed and occupied California, but the mission/presidio system failed to attract sufficient settlers.
When Mexico obtained independence, California lost its centralized support and spent three decades in political confusion.
In June,1846, Yankee residents of California took it over in the Bear Flag Revolt and one month later the American Navy took control without firing a shot.
California became an official territory at the end of the Mexican American War on February 2, 1848, nine days before gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill. A constitution (with voters' ratification was obtained, which was recognized by the US Congress in October, 1850. this led to California becoming a state.
Miscellaneous Information
California does not have a stellar reputation, especially with New Yorkers. Truman Capote made two major remarks which have wide circulation:
1. For every year you live in California, you lose two points off your IQ.
2. To die in LA is redundant. |
