Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland. The picture above is of the Royal Mile which leads up to Edinburgh Castle.
History
Edinburgh's history starts with the building of a fort in the fifth century ti protect the Picts from the invading Angles. The present castle was built on the site by Michael Canmore.
Edinburgh and the port of Leith were granted a charter by Robert the Bruce.
The Union of Parliaments in 1707 removed Scotland's independence, but Edinburgh had already been established as capital of Scotland with its own university, legal system and a growing foreign trade.
In the mid 18th century the loch surrounding the castle was drained, North bridge was built and "new town" grew. Edinburgh blossomed into one of Europe's cultural centers.
Now, for the first time in 300 years Edinburgh is again home to a Scottish Parliament. |
