Ever since I was a little girl I was fascinated by the idea of the Orient. I remember trying to learn the Japanese language while still in elementary school. One day, my friend and I were playing on my front porch right after the attack on Pearl Harbor. We were using simple Japanese phrases, such as Domo arigato gozaimasu when a young soldier happened to walk by. He was studying Japanese at Monterey which was the Army's total immersion program. Boy! Was he astonished.
My first trip on my own was to Japan. I went over on a freighter. I have since been to China, Indonesia (Borneo, Bali, and Java), Malaysia, Brunei, Thailand, Taiwan, the Philippines, Singapore, and Hong Kong.
I think I will always be fascinated by the orient.
- Pros:Totally different cultures
- Cons:So far away
- In a nutshell:Some ancient civilizations still there.
