Malta is an interesting island. There are buildings from the Knights Templar, and also prehistoric ruins. The Maltese developed a unique language and culture in which you can detect Italian, Arabic, English, Jewish, French, and Spanish influences.

History

The first settlers arrived in Malta around 5000BC, probably by boat from Sicily. New arrivals, from 3600-2500BC brought with them a new culture and religion. They built impressive megolithic temples-- the oldest free standing buildings in the world. In 2500BC invaders took over Malta and the old civilization died out.

Phoenician traders esrablished a base on the island in the ninth century BC, followed by the Carthaginians in the fifth century BC. From the third to the first centuries BC the Romans and Carthaginians were at war. The Romans pillaged Malta in the First Punic War and came to stay in 218BC. The Maltese were given municipal privileges by Rome in 41BC. Then, in 60AD St. Paul was shipwrecked on Malta. He converted the Roman governor and the islanders to Christianity.

When the Roman Empire split in the fourth century, Malta became part of Byzantium. Then Arabs invaded and occupied Malta in the ninth century.

Norman knights captured Malta from the Arabs in 1090. Successive invasions followed, by Byzantium, the Swabians (Germans), the Angevins (French), and the Aragonese (Spanish.)

In the sixteenth century, King Charles V of Spain, Holy Roman Emperor, gave Malta to the Order of St. John. In 1565, Suleyman the Magnificent besieged Malta for four months with 30,000 troops. The knights repelled the troops and set about building a magnificent city, Valetta.

In 1798, Napoleon's forces invaded, expelled the knights and looted island churches. With the help of the British, the Maltese struck back and threw the French out. Britain took Malta under its protection, with Malta becoming a British Crown Colony in 1814.

Italy's first target in WWII, along with Germany, was Malta. The Maltese moved into caves, but Allied reinforcements came and put the Axis on the defensive.

Malta won its independence from Britain in 1964 with the last British forces leaving in 1979.
