Founded by the Greeks in 387 BC, Ancona eventually became an independent republic until it joined the papal states in 1532. In between, this area, known as Marche (The Marches), saw the passage of several civilizations-- the Umbrians, the Etruscans and the Roomans. It was attacked by Frederick Barbarosa and dominated by the Venetian Republic. The region remained under papal rule until 1860 when it became part of the Kingdom of Italy.
Today, Ancona is a busy commercial and industrial city. It is noted for the manufacture of accordians and guitars.
It is also the location to catch the ferry to Croatia, Greece, or Turkey.
the major sights include the Cathedral of San Ciriaco, Arco Clemente and the National Archeological Museum of the Marches.
It is a gateway to the country, San Marino. |
