Enjoy the Modern City

The modern capital of the Tunisian Republic exists along side of a medieval Arab medina. It is also the principal port, beong situated 10 km inland from the Gulf of Tunis on the shores of a lake linked to the Mediterranean Sea. It is located in north eastern Tunisia. There is also Carthage, the ancient Phoenician and Roman city.

Here is a photo of the modern city.

See my travelogue on the city of Tunis.

Tunis is neither very Arab nor very African. It is functional, effective and clean. You will notice a lack of beggars. All the women wear modern clothing.

The suuq is arranged in an orderly manner. Goldsmiths, metalworkers, fabric shops, etc. each have their own section. The clean professions have their suuqs near the main mosque., the Zitouna, while the unclean professions like dyeing and crude metal works were placed further away.

Carthage

Here are some ruins of ancient Carthage.
