The Pyramids from a Distance The pyramids are much larger than I originally believed them to be. In fact, when you first see them, coming in from Cairo, they tower over adjacent buildings. |
Pyramids and Sphinx Giiza was the most important royal necropolis of the Fourth Dynasty. The Great Pyramid remained the tallest building in the world until early in the 20th century. It is the last survivor of the Seven Wonders of the World. Giza, situated on the west bank of the Nile became the burial place for Memphis (the pharaoh's capital city) 5,000 years ago. The Great Pyramid of Khufu was the largest, but appears smaller than that of Khafre which was built on higher ground. Khafre's pyramid retains its outer casing at the top. Menkaure's pyramid is the smallest. The gash in the north face was made by Caliph Othman in 1196 AD. The Sphinx is thought to be a portrait of the 4th Dynasty King Khafre. |
