Sharm el Sheikh, once a sleepy fishing village, has developed recently into a major luxury holiday resort.
In 1967, Egypt's President Gamal Abdel Nasser blocked the Strait of Turan cutting off Israel's access to the Red Sea. This led to the 6 Day War and the occupation of the Sinai by Israel.
In 1968 the Israelis built the settlement Ophira which today is the old city of Sharm el Sheikh.
Naama Bay, site of the deluxe holiday resorts, means "pleasant" in Hebrew.
The region of Sharm el Sheikh, located on the east shore of the southernmost tip of the Sinai Peninsula, is actually a series of bays with extraordinary coral reefs. |
Sharm el Sheikh is the name most often used to refer to the southern tip of the Sinai from Ras Mohammed in the west to Shark Bay in the east. Na'ama Bay is where the first hotel appeared in the early eighties. the seafront boasts a beautiful paved walkway. You can see the walkway in the photo. Sharm el Maya is the name of the old town. Ras um Sid is a cliff top area that links Na'ama Bay and the Bay of Sharm el Maya. |
