Tasmania is located off the southeast corner of mainland Australia. It is surrounded by the Southern Ocean, the Tasman Sea and Bass Strait. One of its features is the animal called the Tasmanian Devil. Take a look.

The population of Tasmania is 472,00 of whom 195,500 live in Hobart.

Hobart has the nation's second lowest rainfall of all Australian capital cities. The average summer temperature is 70°F and the average winter temperature is 52°F.

Tasmania is the smallest of Australia's six states. Originally known as Van Diemen's Land, it is the second oldest of the Australian colonies.

Hobart was established in 1803. It served as a major whaling port and shipbuilding center.

Hobart's modern deep water port handles lare ships and is a terminal for freighters that trade between Tasmania and mainland Australia. It is also used by Japanese long-line and squid-fishing boats to replenish supplies.

Hobart has many colonial buildings. Among the most important are Parliament House (1840) which was formerly the Customs House, the Town Hall, the State Government Offices in Franklin Square, and Government House on the Queen's Domain. The Theatre Royal, built in 1837, is Australia's oldest theater. Anglesea Barracks, built in 1814, is the oldest military establishment in the country still occupied by the army.

Wonderful memories for me seeing your pictures. Port Arthur is interesting, we were there just before the tragedy which occurred there a few years ago.
