  • Tip Rating:
  • Take a Harbour Cruise of Sydney. I recommend Captain Cook's. The boat is comfortable. The guide is excellent.

  • By all means visit the Opera House. BUT, be wary of the tours. See my tip on tourist traps.

Darling Harbour: Be sure to visit Chinatown.
  • Tip Rating:
  • There is distinctly oriental architecture, along with street lanterns and archways. Sydney's Chinatown has recently extended from the bounds of Dixon, Hay, and Sussex Streets to George Street in the east and Darling Harbor in the west. The Asian restaurants are open throughout the day, until 4:00am in some cases.

Chinatown is an easy 15 minute walk from Central railway station. A light rail service operates from Central to Haymarket, just outside Chinatown. The nearest Sydney Explorer stop to Chinatown is stop number 17.

The Rocks and Circular Quay: The Rocks
  • Tip Rating:
  • Be sure to visit the Rocks---Sydney's oldest section. It was settled by the 750 convicts along with 400 settlers who all arrived on the ships of the First Fleet on January 26, 1788.

The historic buildings in the Rocks have been recycled to house shops, restaurants, art galleries, etc. There are many pubs.

  • Visit the Queen Victoria Building with its upscale mall in this 1898 Byzantine building. It replaced the original Sydney Markets, then became a concert hall. Eventually it became the City Library.

It was remodelled in the 1930s and used for varied purposes. In 1984 it was completely refurbished as a shopping center with more than 200 shops.

Golden Century's king crab makes me cry. The steamed scallops with ginger and garlic is also heavenly.

What a shame you were treated so poorly by the lady at the Opera House. Most of Aussies are not like that at all. Some very helpful & accurate tips on my hometown. Regards from downunder.

It looks like you had a ball in Sydney. I'm all for going back, but I believe I'll do it at Christmas next time. Now that I think back on it, I think I've been to the Victoria Building.
