Petra (the name means "rock")was the capital of the Nabataean Arabs which flourished for over 400 years around 2,000 years ago. It was then occupied by the Roman legions of the Emperor Trajan in 106 AD.
Petra has over 800 individual monuments. Most were carved from sandstone by the Nabataeans.
You enter Petra by going along the siq, a log passageway through overhanging cliffs. |
