History

There were people at Terra-Amata (Nice) 400,000 years ago. The Massaliots, victorious over the Barbarians in 300 BC founded Nikaia. In 154 BC, the Romans built a second city, Cemenelum, next to Nikaia on the hills of Cimiez. Ruins indicate that the city had 15,000 to 20,000 inhabitantas.

In the fifth century Cemenelum was abandoned for Nikaia.

The Saracens, who devastated the city in 813, were driven away by Guillaume, the Count of Provence, in 974.

A charter was granted to Nice in 1176. In 1382, on the death of Queen Jeanne, Nice integrated the county of Savoy.

Catherine Segurane repelled the Turkish fleet in 1543.

The department of the Alpes Maritime was created in 1793.

In 1860 Nice became a definitive part of France.
