THE URGE TO SCUBA IS COMING I FEEL IT!!!
For those of you interested in travel to Honduras, might I suggest a place to go? Assuming that was a rousing 'yes', I shall continue by saying that Roatan is the place to go, especially if you want seclusion, diving, snorkeling, and some quality restaurants. Look into Roatan, and visit my site on Casa Cooper, a rental house owned by my father and some friends. It is advertised under VT Merchant. Also, go to www.honduras realestate.net, vacation rental list, Casa Cooper. Enjoy. I'll have more on Honduras soon. Also see www.payabay.com!

Hi, I would recommend you go to the West End area of the island. That area offers cheaper lodging. There are many hotels along that area that have fairly good prices. I don't know their phone numbers (if they have phones) but I'm pretty sure they have vacancies. You may just have to go and look around, ask around.

For the best diving, I'd say Paya Bay. (www.payabay.com) They are located way on the eastern side of the island, but the diving is the clearest and least disturbed on the island. I would also recommend Anthony's Key Resort (AKR) or Fantasy Island, both of which offer great dives. At AKR you can dive or snorkel with dolphins, and it is fairly close to the west end. Fantasy Island is east of the airport, but they offer good dive trips. Be sure to dive the north shore of the island as it is less disturbed than the south side.

I would also recommend getting a car or some type of transportation, although taxis are not hard to find. There is an Avis right across the street from the airport, but I'd recommend going to Avis's site, finding the number and requesting a car in advance. Call back the day before you leave, or the morning of your departure to make sure the car is still there for you. Sandy Bay rentals is also good.

West Bay beach is a good beach, also, not very secluded, but large and free of waves is Parrot Tree Plantation, offering a lagoon area to swim in. Parrot Tree is located east of the airport, past Fantasy Island on the right side of the road. There is only one main road. For some of the best beach, lodging and snorkeling, I would recommend Palmetto Plantation, if you are looking for decent seclusion. The casts for the European version of Temptation Island were housed at Palmetto, so it's a pretty romantic spot. Prices may be steep.
Depending on how much you are wanting to spend there are houses for rent as well, offering more privacy, and more space for larger groups. I hope this helps, and email me if you have more questions. John

BZE-HON trip "details"
What we did, and I don't know if it is possible to repeat this, but here it is: Punta Gorda to Puerto Barrios by sea (overnight in Puerto Barrios) Puerto Barrios to Livingston and up the Rio Dulce where we caught taxis that took us through the bananna plantations (lots of bribes to guards) to a river (location, unknown). At the river we caught a boat that ran up through some narrow channels, got out and walked a ways to another boat, shallower draft, (and maybe even a third boat with even shallower draft) and drove through a swamp until the water was too shallow, then walked the boat along until it was deep enough to get back in. We were fully loaded with luggage and junk too. Got in boat, rode until it stopped, got out and walked to a road where we waited next to stinky beans drying in the sun. Caught a ride in the back of a born-again-Christian's pickup and rode to Puerto Cortes. I think those boats do run, but I'm not sure when, where, and how much they cost... it's not a common happening, I don't think.

Tinkan (Keith) keeps telling me to go to Roatan. And now you second that opinion. Hmmm . . . Great page.

Good info. However, as an update, "French Harbor" is not closed, and has an excellent hotel, yacht club, restaurant, marina, etc. newly renovated!
