Anyone who has been to Florence will know what I mean when I say it is impossible not to fall in love with this delightful and breathtaking city. |
|  | The Duomo One of the great landmarks in Florence, the Camponile (cathedral bellfry)was started in 1334 by Giotti and completed by Francesco Talenti in 1387. It is well worth the climb up 414 steps for the splendid view of the city from the top. Duomo Santa Maria del Fiore, more than just a symbol of the city. Famous architects di Cambio, Giotto, Pisano, Talenti and Ghini all added to the evolution between 1294 and 1420, when Brunelleschi crowned it with the dome. Brunelleschi gambled on creating a structural masterpiece with his dome, the greatest engineering feat of the Renaissance. At the time of its construction the dome aroused disbelief and delight. It is today the fourth largest church in the world, behind the St. Peter's (Vatican), St. Paul's (London), and the Duomo in Milan. |
