Not Quite What The Guidebooks Describe

Nerja, from the Balcony of Europe viewing station
This was my second trip to Nerja -- the first being in the 1980's. My memories were of a charming, whitewashed town on the Mediterranean, largely unspoiled by tourism. In fact, this is EXACTLY what all the guidebooks still descrtibe! Frommers, Thomas Cook and others still rate Nerja as one of the TOP TEN destinations in Spain and discuss how quaint it is as compared to other Costa Del Sol beach towns. Be warned -- it is NOT like this anymore! It is larger, noiser, and more crowded than described. Moreover, it features, like most of the other Costa Del So towns, plenty of the "national birds of Spain" -- the construction crains.

All that said, the beaches -- especially Playa Burriana -- are lovely. The other main attraction (and it's a good one) is the Nerja Cave. Don't miss this amazing set of caverns, based in the tiny neighboring town of Maro. Adn by the way, the Maro Beach is not bad either, although a bit more "rustic" than Burriana.

To park at Burriana with ease, get there before 10:00 and the streets are amazingly empty. You may be "hit up" for a parking permit by a local man hawking a handicapped parking pass, but politely say "no." Parking is free as indicated!
