The region is rich in history, from prehistoric caves, to Roman ruins, to medieval vilalges, castles and fortresses. In addition to visiting some of the more famous sites (such as Pont du Gard or Avignon), the small villages with narrow and cobblestone streets are a great way to experience the history of the region -- especially on market day, when one can easily imagine the market vendors of 300 years ago lining up in the very same streets to sell their products.
