Cusco -- Beautiful and Well-Situated

Cusco is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful towns in Peru. It is also perfectly situated for travelers who want to explore the fasicnating archeological legacy of the Incas. Plan on spending a minimum of three days based in Cusco, to fully see the surrounding sites -- excluding Maccu Piccu, which should -- to do it right -- require and additional 3-5 days of hiking.

A City of History

One of the most beautiful towns in Peru, Cusco was the southern capital of the Inca Empire. At its peak, this empire stretched north to the south of Colombia, south to northern Chile and Argentina, and west across the Andes to the Amazon basin.

As you walk the old streets of town, you will see the skill and exquisiteness of the intricate Inca stonemasonry work on the many walls that serve as foundations to colonial buildings.

The weather is also invigorating! The crisp air, surrounding mountains and Andean sky provide the perfect backdrop to Cusco’s cobbled narrow streets, lovely buildings and plazas and its many hidden treasures and churches.

Pentiful Sidetrips

After getting to know Cusco -- and before heading off to a Machu Picchu trek, venture out beyond Cusco to visit the Sacred Valley of the Incas, a lovely fertile valley that lies north of Cusco. The Sacred Valley is lined with picturesque Andean markets, impressive churches and remarkable Inca ruins.

If you have time, visit the ruins of Pisaq, one of the most important archaeological complexes in the region, set high above the valley with stunning terracing following the hill contours. The Pisaq archaeological ruins are located on the top of a mountain 2 ½ miles away from town, surrounded by some of the most impressive agricultural terraces in Peru, still in use today.

FInally, don't miss the town of Pisaq itself, including its famous market.
