Beware when drinking vodka with Russians - remember they have grown up downing it in one. Always have food with neat vodka. Usually the vodka is served with delicacies such as pickled gerkins, pickled garlic and other such appetisers.

You are supposed to carry your passport and visa with you at all times in case the police ask for it. My friend, however, insisted that I leave the passport locked up safe in his apartment and that I carry the copies around. It seems that a British passport can command high sums on the Black Market. It is worth emailing copies of your visa and passport details page to your won email address. If your documents are stolen then you can easily access the copies.

The invitation for a private individual visa can take a few months. It is actually the procedure that the Russian citizen who is issuing the invitation has to go through that takes the time. If you live in the UK, the Edinburgh office is much quicker than the London one for processing visas. Mine was returned within a week.
