Risen Like A Phoenix From The Ashes

Old Town Square
On first sight, the city strikes you as a city devoid of character and just like a huge concrete jungle. However, when you venture nearer to the city centre you come across its true splendour. As well as the concrete monstrosity, parts of the city have been reconstructed to its original form with great attention for detail.

The main reason for Warsaw’s appearance is due to the fact that approximately 85% of the city was destroyed during World War II. However, you can now see a city that has risen like a phoenix from the ashes. Even today the reconstruction of the city is still taking place with shopping arcades and cinema complexes being built. Even during my last two trips to the city I couldn't help but be amazed at how much things have changed.

Prior to the war there was a strong Jewish influence in the city, but today there is very little evidence of this as most Jews were either deported or sent to one of the many concentration camps. There are however several memorials to honour their suffering scattered around the city, particularly towards the Ratusz Metro station.

Warsaw is the capital of Poland and also the main economic and cultural centre. It lies on the Vistula that you will often find frozen solid in winter. It isn't a particularly clean river but you can enjoy pleasant strolls along the banks in warmer weather.

The best times to visit the city are between May and September. Winters can be harsh – especially in January and February. The city can be like a skating rink at times and it has been known for the city hospitals to run out of plaster casts.

I visit the city fairly frequently as this is where my brother lives and teaches English. I try to visit as often as I get chance and have seen the city in all seasons. I personally prefer summer when you can sit in the park and enjoy the sun.

Great page! I wonder if you've been to the Museum of the Warsaw Uprising? It's a modern, multimedia, interactive thing with great info about the war destruction of the city. A visit makes a huge impression, especially when you hire a guide.

Thanks Marie for interesting tips and pics! Warsaw is really worth visiting. We cross this city every year on our way to Germany and back Moscow. Sometimes we make a short stop for excursion...
