Wroclaw is the fourth largest city in Poland (after Warsaw, Lodz and Krakow) and is the capital of Lower Silesia. It is located in the centre of the Silesian lowlands. It lies on the River Odra and there are four other smaller rivers within the city plus numerous streams. This is one of the reasons that the city is so susceptible to flooding.

It is a major industrial, commercial, and cultural centre.

The city developed from a Slavonic tribe and was conquered by the Czech prince Wrocislaw. In 1526, it fell into the hands of the Hasburgs of Austria and following Austria's defeat in the the 1741 war with Prussia, it came under German rule. It remained this way for over 200 years.

At the end of World War II the Germans proclaimed the city as a fortress. It was during this time that the city was badly destroyed. About 70 percent of the city was destroyed. It became Polish soil once more on the 6th May 1945.

The town was originally built on the island of Ostrow Tumski – which is no longer an island.

My first visit to the city was late in 1989. I had arranged the trip with a friend before the collapse of the Berlin Wall. At the time, I thought that it would maybe be a trip of a lifetime. Unknown to me this was to be the beginning of a long association with the country and the people.

Hazy memories only of Wroclaw of a visit way back in 1971 but the Town Hall, rivers and parks feature - as do the mosquitos. Going back would be interesting! leyle

Hi, I have the same reaction when I tell my friends I'm off on a holiday to Poland. Wroclaw is still on my list of places to visit.

Sorry, not true. Last big flood was in July 1997. And that was called flood of the millennium. Normally nothing like this hapens.
