I visited the town on an Interrailing trip and stayed with a penfriend.
The town is perched on the steep hills above the Yantra River. It has been watching over Bulgaria for five thousand years. Its citizens led the national uprising againsy Byzantine rule in 1885. its fortress walls and battle towers have stood dince the 12th to 14th centuries when it was the capital of Bulgaria. After the overthrow of the Turks, the country’s first constitution was signed heer and named for the city.
The town is lined with outdoor cafes and workshops and lantern lit streets. It is Bulgaria’s biggest treasure chest of ruins. |
