The city of Naples rises from the bay up the hillsides with Mount Vesuvius looming in the background. In the distance in the Bay of Naples, the island of Capri lies. You can’t ask for a more magnificent setting for a city.
It lies in the region of Campania and is the capital city of the area. The region covers Pompeii, Vesuvius, Sorrento and the smaller resorts of Vico Equense and Amalfi.
The city’s claim to fame is one of the most famous foods in the world – the pizza. It is from here that this now universal dish sprang. Other food specialities of the area are pasta with its numerous sauces and ice cream.
The area is a volcanic one and you can never forget this with Vesuvius in the background. There are many old craters lying around from numerous past eruptions. There are also earth tremors with the last one being in 1980. The last eruption of the volcano was in 1944 and it is still active.
Because of the high unemployment in the city Naples has a reputation for poverty and crime. The Camorra (older than the Mafia) has a strong influence although this is rarely visible to tourists.
