Famagusta District

Cavo Greco Sunset
The district of Famagusta in the free area of Cyprus covers Dherynia, Paralimni, Protaras and Ayia Napa. It is an area in which you will find a lot of tourism. This has been developed in the area due to the pre-1974 resorts of Famagusta and Kyrenia now being in the hands of the Turkish Cypriots.

Part of the actual town of Famagusta, Varosha, has been inaccessible to the Greek Cypriots of the island since the 1974 invasion. With the current talks on the reunification of the island, hopefully the whole area will soon be reunited.

This photo shows Cape Greco at sunset. This is area is a beautiful tip of the island with the clearest blue seas you can imagine.

Not Just A Holiday - A Work Place Too

I first visited the area on holiday quite by accident and happened to fall in love with the area and the people. I'd never been to Cyprus prior to 1994 and when a change of jobs left me not able to take a holiday until October, we took a late booking to Cyprus. We chose one of the allocated on arrival packages and ended up in the Pernera area of Protaras.

I made so many friends on the first trip that I ended up going back to visit them the following year. Over the holidays spent there, my friend Kay suggested going over there to work. It took me until I qualified as an accountant and then off I went to work for one summer.

It so happened that I enjoyed myself so much I went back a second year! Here is an insight into the area which has become my second home. Sometime in the future I also intend to add something about working over in these parts and some of my experiences.

Hope Of Unity

There are talks currently underway between the prime ministers of the two halves of the island. They sound much more positive than they have in recent years. Who knows maybe this year I will get to see more of the island than I have been able to visit previously. Then maybe sights like this will be a thing of the past.

The vote in April 2004 failed to reunite the island. Let's hope there will be a more successful attempt in the near future.

Twenty different dishes in the meze of Kartanas Restaurant ! That's sounds fine for me ! Cyprus cooking seems to have more variety than continental greek cooking.
