Kuala Lumpur

Petronas Towers
When my friend lived in KL I never managed to visit. Although I was staying in Johor Bahru, one trip I had to make was to the capital. Given my love of high buildings I had to visit the city if only to go up the Menara Tower.

My first impressions of Kuala Lumpur were of a bustling, noisy, ultra-modern city interspersed with reminders of Islam and of its previous colonial past. A prime example of the bustle and noise of the city was most acute when I caught the coach back to JB from Puduraya bus station. For me this was a real experience of Asia.

Looking a little further around the influence seemed much stronger than Singapore where it seems to me there has been a clinical attempt to wipe some of the past from the country. There does seem to be cars everywhere and road journeys around the city seem to take forever (though it is quicker than London!). I managed to have to return to my hotel an hour after a huge thunder storm when all of the roads were flooded.

As a fair haired female alone in the city, I did not feel threatened at all during my trip. I was warned in advance by my friend’s husband not to venture to the Chow Kit area of the city.

Kuala Lumpur looks like a bustling city! Thanks for the great tips -- especially the ones about the less than trustworthy taxi cab drivers. Best from New Jersey, Bill

Malaysia and especially Kuala Lumpur do interest me much for a future travel destination. Good page you have here. You are like me: why take a taxi when you can walk such a short distance ... and they try to overcharge.
