Death Valley National Park Travel Guide: 896 reviews and 1,904 photos

In the USA, extremes can be found right next to each other. Death Valley is about 86 metres BELOW sea level, and Mount Whitney with over 4000 metres ABOVE sea level the highest mountain within the 48 continental states, is not far away.
The name of the place is not only very descriptive - I suppose in the old days it was a promise as well. Nowadays, well-paved roads guide the traveller through this desolate wilderness, but back then... Little to no water, relentless sun, heat, snakes.... Yet man actually WORKED there, extracting minerals from mines.
