When I was a child, Bavaria was synonymous for Germany for me. Later I learned that I´m not really Bavarian but rather Franconian Now of that I´m quite proud. Note, dear visitors, that Franconia is very different from Bavaria - there is even a movement to make Franconia a separate state within Germany (won´t work, I´m afraid). Fact is, both landscape and people as well as the history are NOT what tourists expect when thinking of Bavaria.
Franconia is in the north of Bavaria, adjacent to Thuringia in the north and the Czech Republic to the east. There´s history galore, castles by the score, museums to keep you busy for weeks, cities (well, ok, there´s one I´d call a "city" - Nuremberg), the loveliest and not at all dreary towns such as Bamberg or Wuerzburg, there´s entertainment though not necessarily of the roaring kind (but check out Nuremberg for "Rock im Park" which is staged every mid-July), there´s rolling landscape, wining and dining - and, of course, beer. ;-)
I´d like to make pages on lots of Franconian places, but VT does not include them in the list. So, by and by, I´ll build up this page. Be prepared for: Bamberg and surrounds (upper Franconia), our "Franconian Switzerland" and a few more glimpses into where I live now, i.e. upper Franconia and the Fichtelgebirge (mountains - naw, hills rather). Just give me a little time and don´t forget to come back - right now, TIME is what I DON'T have.:( This picture was taken from the "Giechburg" (old castle) not far from Bamberg. For that beautiful old town, please see the Travelogue. |
