Wuerzburg - heart of Mainfranken

by smoox - last update: Feb 2, 2006

The town of Wuerzburg is situated on the River Main, about 100 km east of Frankfurt (which, for reasons unknown to me, is always popular with visitors to Germany).
The town has about 100 000 inhabitants, lots of churches (the town is very catholic by tradition, they have even got their own bishop), a well-known university (guess who went to school there), a lovely old town center and a castle, Festung Marienberg.
Let´s not forget the surrounds. The Main valley is famous for the vineyards, and both in summer and autumn there are oh so many wine festivals in and around Wuerzburg. Franconian wine is known and appreciated world-wide, and it is NOT mass production!
