Since before the Province of Alberta was formed in 1905, Edmonton and Calgary have been rivals. Edmonton was Alberta's centre of culture, government, nightlife, money and population when Calgary was nothing but stockyards and cowboys. Then Calgary started to grow. Now the tables are turned, somewhat. Calgary is now the largest city in Alberta, it is the hub of the province's economy. But Edmonton still has a maturity, stability and refinement that young, brash Calgary has yet to develop. The valley of the North Saskatchewan River, upon which Edmonton sits is truly spectacular with it's lush foliage and towering steel trestles... . I'll likely be pilloried in my hometown (Calgary) for saying this, but it puts the Bow River to shame. |
