The year was 1524 just 32 years after Columbus' voyage to the new world, the place was what is today Staten Island, the explorer was Giovanni da Verrazzano, a Florentine sailing under the French flag for Francis I. His objective was exploration and claiming land for his benefactor, not the establishment of colonies. So, how was Giovanni to know that this parcel of land inhabited by the Manhattan Indians would one day become a world hub financially, politically and culturally. He sent favorable reports back to the king of France, but it would be another century before settlers would come to occupy the islands of New York City. |
