In the period of time before Christ, Ephesus was occupied by various civilizations, including the Greeks and Romans, each one influencing both her culture and religion. During the time of John, Ephesus was THE greatest harbour in Asia. She was centrally located on the trade route from the Euphrates/Mesopotamia region to the Mediterranean Sea, having passed by Colossae and Laodicea. Ephesus uas the center of worship of the goddess Artemis/Diana. Her temple being one of the seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Today, little is left of this grand city of long ago now some 6 miles from the sea that she once drew life from, little but ruins. |
