Over 40,000 years ago, mastadons cleared the coastlines of southern California. Sealevel at this time was much lower and all eight of the Channel Islands were connected. By the end of the Ice Age however, warmer temperatures resulted in an extreme rise in the water level which killed off many species of large mammals. Small ones such as the island fox, however not only survived, but thrived for hundreds of years until we encrouched on their territory with pesticides that have had a detrimental affect on the environment. This area of California is today being constantly and cautiously studied to learn more about sea life and ecology. |
