Welcome to Arkansas, the Natural State

by Pamela_Peace - last update: Mar 30, 2008

Few people know much about Arkansas apart from Bill Clinton, so here are a few facts about the Natural State. We are a sportsman's haven. Cold northern streams are full of trout - speckled, rainbow, you name it. Duck hunters nation-wide fill our rice fields in the fall and winter taking advantage of the southern bird migration. Arkansas is the only diamond-producing state in the U.S. The Perfect Diamond was found in 1990 at the Crater of Diamonds State Park weighing 3.03 carats in the rough. Visit Murfreesboro and you can even dig for your own. Hot Springs is a vacation paradise, whether it's spa treatment, horseracing and wagering, or simply relaxing on one of its scenic lakes that appeals to you, you'll find it here in this quiet, quaint resort town just an hour's drive from Little Rock. Did you know that our state capitol was fashioned after our national building in D. C. The Arkansas River is the 3rd longest in the nation and the 36th longest stream in the world. It begins in Colorado and flows through Kansas, Oklahoma and Arkansas before joining the Mississippi River. The Quapaw Indians of Arkansas were making and using decoys to hunt ducks long before Europeans settled this area. Some of our illustrious natives include: actress Mary Steenburgen, Mark Martin, of racecar fame, Sam Walton, founder of Wal-Mart and Sam's , Billy Bob Thornton, screenwriter/director,actor, Maya Angelou, author of "I Know Why the Cagebird Sings" , John Grisham, author of "The Firm," Richard Thalheimer, founder of Sharper Image Catalogue , Glenn Campbell, country recording artist, Helen Gurley Brown, editor of "Cosmopolitan" magazine Harry Thomason, long-time Clinton supporter and producer of the hit series "Designing Women," Patti Upton, founder of Aeromatique.
