    • The ancient ruins of Selcuk stand majestically intact. At one time, the Basilica of St. John occupied most of the nearby hillside and was ranked with Hagia Sophia as one of the largest Byzantine churches of its time. According to tradition, the grave of St. John the Divine is under the remains of the church which was destroyed by an earthquake. Restoration efforts are under way today here.

    • The countryside around Izmir is lush and green - rolling hills sprout a profusion of olive trees. On pretty afternoons, families of all sizes can be seen picnicking beneath the trees. This scene is approaching the village of Sirince, not far from Selcuk.

    • Sirince offered surprising finds in handmade items such as tablecloths, clothing and leather goods. Narrow dirt streets wind throughout this delightful little village.

    • These ladies at Restaurant Ozlem are preparing gozleme, a flatbread filled with either cheese, potatoes, spinach or eggplant. I tried them all, of course, and they were excellent. This is a nice, light meal for lunch.

     1988 I was in the US military & worked in this Church. I was a close friend of the caretaker-Nuri Kalaci. He lived in a house beside the Church. He died leaving his wife, Elizabeth, son and baby daughter. Do you know if the present caretaker is Elizabeth?    		RLFielding123A Sat Apr 15, 2006 18:41 UTC
