Transportation: The best way is to fly. I...

Getting TO/AROUND: The best way is to fly. I love British Airways. BA flies mainly into Gatwick, on the outskirts of South London. You can take a train into the center of London, but you should rent a car. Buy USAA insurance before arriving from America- it will keep the costs down. Charge the car, most often you will get a better exchange rate.
Automobiles are the best and most reliable. Trains can be expensive and unreliable (the socialist native factor). Air fares between London and Edinburough are running about 70 pounds sterling ($120). Rental car is about $800 per month (unlimited mileage.) Be warned, Yankees are spoiled on petro prices. The Brits pay 74 pence per liter- about $5 per gallon. Might want to ride the bus.

Getting TO/AROUND: I am a Land Rover enthusiast. Amercians beware, Brits pay about 74p per liter (that's almost $6 per gallon for you Americans!) Roundabouts are great. Look out for the wild teenage driver obviously speeding along in someone else's car- wrecks do not have to be your fault. Motorcycles and bicycles weave in and out of traffic.

Hah! You mention Romford! One of my best friends lived in Hornchurch and we shopped in Romford; used to visit her but she's not with us anymore.
