This was originally a small fishing village south of Cancun, but the last years has transformed it into a bustling tourist resort. I think
Playa del Carmen is a great base for exploring all of the interesting places on the Mayan riviera and the Yucatan peninsula. It is smaller, quieter and more charming than
Cancun which lies just one hour north. But it is bigger and more touristy than
Tulum one hour south, and it's just a short boatride from the island
Cozumel which offers some of the best snorkelling and scubadiving in the world. To the magnificent site of
Chichén Itzá it's a 3 hours drive, but it's definetly worth a trip!
The beaches can be a bit crowded some places, but walk a little bit to the north and you can have the beach all to yourself. The
"5th avenue" can be too touristy, but a few blocks away from the beach you can find small and charming mexican shops and restaurants. This little city has so much to offer if you want it.
