Take a walk along the beach and explore the area. Sometimes you might have to climb some rocks or walk on some cliffs, but it is a great journey. You have magnificent views of the surrounding jungle, and of course the sea and the beach.
Get up and watch the sunrise! Yes I know it's very early, but it's worth it. At least one day... ;) It is really beautiful, and all kinds of colors covers the sky. If you live in a cabaña made of bamboo and situated on the beach you are very lucky. Then you don't even have to get out of bed to see the sunrise, as you can see it through the holes in the wall... ;)
Trying to put the ingredients inside the coconut
If you have gone through all the trouble of relieving a coconut from it's prison, why not make a piñacolada? Make a whole in the coconut and pour a bit of white rum and pineapple juice inside. Mix it with the coconut milk that is inside, put a straw through the hole and enjoy your very own handpicked and 'natural' piñacolada... ;)
I finally got the coconut out...
All along the beach you can find coconuts. Pick one up, open it and eat it. It's great! But you might want to have a knife... I wanted to do it 'the natural way', just with a stone. It was sunlight when I started, and after the moon took over I gave up and used the knife. But it's a great feeling when you finally get the coconut out and you can open it and drink the milk. It's worth the struggle and all the broken nails... :)
You don't have to fight for a place
More beaches... The beach in Papaya Playa is great. It stretches out a long way, and you can find your own place without being too close to anyone else on the beach.
All of the cabañas are next to the beach, so in the morning you can just wake up, roll out of bed and down to the beach.
Beautiful beaches
I think I could write a whole book about how incredible beautiful the beaches of Tulum is. They are really paradisebeaches. Kilometres and kilometres of long white beaches, and the crystalclear turquise water. It's so beautiful, and there are not so many tourists so you can find a place all to yourself.
El Castillo seen from the beach
There is a bigger beach between El Castillo and Templo del mar. It's a bit tricky to get to this beach so there are not so many tourists here. You can either climb down the mountainside, or you can go swimming or climbing over the rocks from the small beach.
It's really not so difficult to get there, and it's worth it just to escape the crowds. You also have an incredible view up to the castle from here. Unfortunately they were building some stairs from behind El Castillo and down to the big beach when I was there. So then this beach will not be as quiet anymore.
The small beach can get a bit crowded
There is a small, beautiful beach right between El Castillo and Templo del viento. But this is the most accesible beach so it can be a bit crowded here.
Anyway it's great to cool off a bit in the sea in the middle of the sightseeing. Or just lay down on the sand or the rocks to take a bit of sun.
Relax in the sea
Take a swim in the ocean! It's really nice and warm, and most of the time very calm. Unless you get caught in a small storm where the currents can get quite strong and the waves very high. But most of the time it is perfect to just float and swim around in the sea.
If you snorkel it's really not so much to see close to the beach. The coral reef is situated out in the sea and there are many tour operators and hotels that arrange different trips.
Can you find the iguana on the picture?
Everywhere around the ruins you can see iguanas. It's almost like they have inhabited the site, and are carefully watching their precious ruins. They have the same color as the stones so it can be quite hard to see them sometimes. But don't worry, they don't like it if you come too close so then they just turn and run away from you.
Iguanas have actually been a source of food for thousands of years. The most normal is to sautee them in onion, tomatoes and chilly. If anyone has ever tried it please tell me how it tasted. Personally I prefer watching them from a distance... ;)
