Bar Boca is a very nice and popular place - Oslo

Bar Boca is a very nice and popular place

BAR BOCA: SMALL BAR WITH GOOD COCKTAILS Bar Boca Review

This is a very small and charming bar. It's decorated in a nice 50's retrostyle and has a few tables where you can sit down. It is very popular on weekdays too and it can be quite crowded sometimes. You better not be too claustrophobic... ;)

The cocktails here are excellent and you should check out the very large selection that they have. The service is also very good, and it's not too expencive.

You have to be at least 22 years to come inside, and there is no entrance fee.

Dress Code: It's a relaxed atmosphere and you can come in your casual clothes, or dress up if you prefer that.

Address: Thorvald Meyersgate 30

Directions: Grünerløkka. Take tram 11, 12 or 13 to Olaf Ryes plass.

Blue Monk - Oslo

Blue Monk

BLUE MONK: PUB WITH ROCK AND ALTERNATIVE MUSIC

Blue Monk is a very informal place and I like to drop by for a cheap beer or two. Sometimes there are conserts here, and you can check out there webpage to see who's playing.

It's very cheap here, and many students hang out in this place. Across the street is Blitz, which is a house that has been occupied by leftwing radicals and "rebelling" youth for over 20 years. Many of the people from Blitz also hang out in Blue Monk.

There is normally no admission fee here.

Dress Code: Very informal. People might give you a strange look if you are too dressed up... :)

Address: St. Olavsgate 23

Directions: Right next to Blitz-huset, and a five minute walk from Karl Johansgate and the metrostation at the %National theatre.

Horgans - Oslo

Horgans

HORGAN'S: POPULAR AMERICAN BAR ON THE WESTSIDE

This was for a long time THE place to be for the people from the westside of Oslo. Prices are high and the dresscode a bit stiff, but it's an ok place to spend the night and it's always lots of people here. They also serve food, mostly american and tex-mex, and there's a disco in the basement.

There are many tv-screens around the bar, and they are showing the major sports events, from football to Superbowl and skiing.

Dress Code: The more 'labels' the better... ;)

Address: Hegdehaugsveien 24

Directions: Not so far from the Royal Castle. Take tram no 11 to Homansbyen.

Last Train - Oslo

Last Train

LAST TRAIN: SMALL, BUT GREAT, BAR

This used to be one of my favorite places, but it's always so crowded here. It's impossible to walk one meter without being bumped into all the time, and you are very lucky if you last a whole night without someone spilling a drink on you.

But the music is great and sometimes there are even live conserts here. They play mostly alternative or rock-kind of music, and you can meet absolutely all kinds of people here.

It's a great place to take a drink or two, but on the most crowded nights it can get too tiresome to stay here a long time. But absolutely worth checking out.

Dress Code: Wear whatever you want... :)

Address: Karl Johans Gate 45

Directions: Entrance from Universitetsgata, close to Karl Johansgate. Right between Studenten and Onkel Donald.

John Dee - Oslo

John Dee

JOHN DEE: GOOD PLACE FOR ROCK MUSIC AND CONSERTS

This is the 'littlebrother' of nearby Rockefeller that hosts a lot of bigger conserts. John Dee is often used as a 'vorspiel'- or 'nachspiel' place to many of the conserts in Rockefeller.

It's a very nice place, and some of the conserts that are here are pretty good. Most bands that play here are up-and-coming rock bands.

Dress Code: Come as you are...

Directions: Close to Torggata and Youngstorget, right next to Rockefeller.

Harry's - Oslo

Harry's

HARRY'S: ALMOST LIKE FRIDAY’S Harry's Bar Review

This place is located right next to Friday’s in Karl Johansgate, and it’s very similar to it’s neighbour. It’s a very popular place, and there are always lots of people here.

The music is the normal commercial songs that are popular at the time, but it’s ok. They also have a restaurant in the basement, and it’s nice to take some drinks here after you had your dinner here too.

Dress Code: You can come as you want, but it's nice to dress up a little bit.

Address: Karl Johansgate 33

Directions: Right next to Friday's on Karl Johansgate. Take the metro to 'Stortinget' or 'Nationalteatret'.

Gloria Flames - Oslo

Gloria Flames

GLORIA FLAMES: POPULAR BAR IN GRØNLAND WITH ROCK MUSIC

This is one of my favorite places, but unfortunately there are lots of others that think the same. Sometimes it can get too crowded, and if you come too late you have to wait in a long line to get inside.

The place is located next to McDonalds in Grønland. Just follow the music and the long line... :) They also have a roofterrace, and it's very nice to sit here in the summer evenings.

They play mostly rock-kind of music, and sometimes there are conserts here too. You can find all kinds of people here.

Dress Code: Wear whatever you want... :)

Address: Grønland 18

Directions: Close to McDonalds and the metrostation in Grønland.

Den gamle majors lab is a interesting place - Oslo

Den gamle majors lab is a interesting place

DEN GAMLE MAJORS LAB: BAR WITH GHOSTS AND HIDDEN DOORS

Den gamle majors lab means "the laboratory of the old major", and it is a very interesting place. It's absolutely worth a visit, if only to find the toilet... ;) The door to the toilet is hidden in one of the bookcases, but I won't tell you where. When you have found the way inside the toilet you can hear different screams, and if you look in the mirror you might see other strange things, besides yourself... The interior is a strange mix of old english pub and modern laboratory, and the staff is dressed in white doctors coats.

Many years ago this was a dark and tired pub, but it has gone through a big renovation and is today a popular place in Majorstua. They also serve food for a great price, but the drinks are a bit expencive here.

Address: Bogstadveien

Directions: Majorstua; many metros, buses and trams stop nearby. Located at the top of Bogstadveien, not so far from Majorstua metrostation.

Fru Hagen - popular and crowded - Oslo

Fru Hagen - popular and crowded

FRU HAGEN: ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS IN GRÜNERLØKKA

Fru Hagen was one of the first trendy places that opened in Grünerløkka and contributed to making this one of the hottest areas in the city. It's perphaps one of the most famous places in Grünerløkka, and for many years this was one of the most important places to be seen.

I've never really understood why, though. It's a very nice place, but you can find similar places around the city. It's not too expencive, but there are lots of just as nice places nearby that are even cheaper. If you don't come early and get a table, it can be a very tiresome experience. It's always very crowded and people will bump in to you all the time. But it's still one of the most popular places in Grünerløkka, so it can be worth checking it out.

Dress Code: You could come in your casual clothes, but most people dress up...

Address: Thorvald Meyersgt 40

Directions: Grünerløkka. Take tram 11, 12 or 13 to Olaf Ryes plass.
