Photos in travelogues, details later
The following is from a message to a VT member, but useful to others as well, I will edit later: We stayed in Oberwesel, then I took train to Cochem, and we drove to Bacharach (you could easily take train to Bacharach as well).
To me, during mid-day, both places are rather touristy: bus loads of tourists downpour into the towns. But before their arrival/after their departure, the towns are in their original charm and peace.
There seem to be more tourists in Cochem, but then Cochem has a big castle to visit, and it is a larger town than Bacharach: they are different. I have some photos of both places in my pages, you are welcome to take a look.
Basically, one has to stay in one of the towns along the Rhine/Mosel to really taste the real life without crowds.
We went there in mid-September, did not feel too crowded. As long as all the students are back to school, one should be fine.
You could either take train, boat, or even bike on the well built bike lane along the river.
There are always festivals, so do some homework before you make arrangement.
There will be wine festival, Rhine festival (many boats gather around certain area, and with firework, very nice, but we missed due to our schedule).
If you are a wine drinker, you probably do not want to miss the wine festival – but then be prepared, if there is a wine festival in one of the towns you are going to, most of the stores/restaurants will be closed and everyone gathers at one place drink, dance, concert, eat and celebrate. |
