A town was founded on its site in the first half of the 13th. century, belonging to the German kings.
In 1322 the town and region was put in pawn to the kings of Bohemia, while its autonomy continued.
In the Hussite period on the side of emperor Sigismund, the rallying place for the crusades against the Hussutes. In 1634 the Imperial Generalissimo Albrecht of Wallenstein was assassinated here.
In the second half of the 17th century a baroque fort. Until middle of the 19th century was Cheb one of the five largest Bohemian towns.
The centre of the town is the picturesque Namesti krale Jiriho z Podebrad Square with many historical houses with gothic cores. The dominant feature of the square are the houses of Jewish merchants, dating from the 16th century, known as „Spalicek“, now nicely architectonically restored.
Other outstanding building include Schirdinger House with a step-like gable, Pachelbel House, the place where Wallenstein was assassinated, since 1874 the town museum, and the Baroque New Town Hall, today Gallery of art. |
