BAYAN KO
Titik ni Jose Corazon de Jesus
Musika ni Constancio de Guzman.

Ang bayan kong Pilipinas
Lupain ng ginto't bulaklak
Pag-ibig ang sa kanyang palad
Nag-alay ng ganda't dilag
At sa kanyang yumi at ganda
Dayuhan ay nahalina
Bayan ko, binihag ka
Nasadlak sa dusa
Ibon man ma'y layang lumipad
Kulungin mo at umiiyak
Bayan pa kayang sakdal dilag
Ang di magnasang makaalpas
Pilipinas kong minumutya
Pugad ng luha ko't dalita
Aking adhika, makita kang sakdal laya

The 3 stars of the Philippine flag represent the main islands of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
The white triangle symbolizes equality and purity.
The blue stripe symbolizes peace, truth, and justice.
The red stripe symbolizes courage, patriotism, and valor.
The light rays on the sun symbolize the first eight provinces to revolt against Spain.
When the country is at peace, the blue stripe is on top; when at war, the red.

Update from the Islands:

I obviously haven't updated this page for quite some time...the Philippines, like the rest of the world, has been reeling from the events of 11 September. Tourism is down, efforts to eliminate the Abu Sayyaf bandits down in Mindanao have been stepped up, and President GMA has been making the rounds of allied nations in a bid to boost the sagging economy and coordinate anti-terrorism measures. In a sad turn of events, my island paradise of Camiguin (see my Davao page and travelogue) was recently devastated by a strong typhoon that brought flash floods and took the lives and homes of hundreds of islanders. Things are definitely not looking up. However, on the brighter side, I hope to make an announcement soon to raise the spirits of all you VT patrons out there who plan to visit the Philippines as well as those who call this country home. Till then, mabuhay tayong lahat!
