My father was born and raised in the scenic island of Mindanao, the second largest major island group in the Philippines, which probably explains my attachment for this beautiful part of the country. During the Estrada administration, Mindanao tourism suffered a great deal because of the Sipadan hostage crisis and the all-out war declared against the Muslim rebels. However, under the new Arroyo government, Mindanao has been given primary focus, with the appointment of a Mindanao native as Vice President, the institution of government developmental programs in the area, and efforts towards peace with our Muslim brothers and sisters in the South. Consequently, travel to Mindanao (save for the most far-flung Southern portions) is safe again. This photo is from my first trip to Mindanao in 1994, right after the Bar exams. We were sunning on one of the beaches in Cagayan de Oro, when a horde of giants suddenly descended upon us (they turned out to be members of the Philippines' most popular professional basketball team, Ginebra San Miguel).
|
