China's modern Capital - a big bureacratic centre, with some interesting thrown in. I've visited Beijing many times and the place just keeps changing. However, even the thronging millions don't disrupt the serenity of the Temple of Heaven, surely one of the world's prettiest buildings. Worth seeing is the The Forbidden City, but it's a little impersonal these days. The clock collection, though, is well worth a look. Likewise, The Summer Palace is great to visit on a nice day. Within its massive boundaries can be found the Dalai Lama's Beijing residents (unused for several decades now), and the Dowager Queen's marble boat. She used the Imperial Navy's annual budget to build this fascinating monstrosity. A few hours out of Beijing the Ming Tombs are worth a visit if you enjoy looking at man made caves - and you just have to walk/c;imb along The Great Wall for one of life's best experiences. |
