Capital of Shaanxi Province and on the main rail route between Xian and Beijing. An industrial city with a great history dating back many thousands of years. Local delicacy is cat's ears noodles which are absolutley scrumptious. Some interesting temples, including the twin pagodas. Taiyuan boasts one of China's widest avenues, but it is not a great tourist town.

Rail or air from either Beijing or Xian. It's a short 90 minute flight from Beijing, but allow a full day by train. more travel advice
