The City of Melbourne, Victoria's Capital, was foundet independently by colonists from Tasmania in 1835. Originally called Bearbrass, the new village was given its name by the Governor of New South Wales after Queen Victoris's Prime Minister.

The life of Melbourne is many facted. Education is served by three universities and serval institutes of technology, support by primary, secondary and adult education centres. Theatre and music flourish, while the fine arts ar displayed in many galleries, chief of which is the National Art Gallery in St. Kilda Road.
The busy, friendly, ever-morning city of Melbourne has so much to offer that a single visit can scarely satisfy everey preference.
