Doesburg is first mentioned in a deed dated between 1053 and 1071. The surroundings must have been very swampy with an occasional sandy hill.
The name remembers of this period of time. According to the languagepro's the name does, duis, doze etc. means a swamp with trees or bushes. Doesburg could mean so much as mountain, keep or town in the middle of such area.

Very nice situated between the rivers IJssel and Oude IJssel, Doesburg grew to a stronghold.

It was declared a city by a deed somewhere in the 13th and 14th century: 1237, 1312 and 1343.
