Defending the Coastline.
In 1803 in answer to the growing French treath of Napoleon invading England, they built 74 towers to defend the nation, the so called Martello towers. The were situated along the southern coastline. 24 of these towers remained, one of them in Dymchurch. Today the all have their own function as a house, Inn, a museum and so on.
